Skip to 0 minutes and 0 seconds Hi everyone before we start next week’s activities I wanted to briefly summarize some of the highlights of week one. It’s been a real privilege to have input on this course from participants from all over the world from the US to Kazakhstan, India and far too many other countries to mention. It’s great to be able to share experiences and ideas about e-learning both as a user or as a more experienced designer or developer of eLearning. In the discussions there was general agreements about the six to sixteen minute rule for the size of an RLO but much more debates about the different modalities used within an RLO. Narration was one area discussed.

Skip to 0 minutes and 38 seconds As Bhajish pointed out when users of the RLOs come from many countries a neutral, clear accent and a well-paced narration is important. Who should narrate the RLOs is something we regularly debate in the HELM team and I don’t think we’ve come up with any definitive answers. There are benefits of having the RLO creator narrate because they know the topic and their enthusiasm comes across in their voice. The alternative is to have professional narrators but that can of course be costly. The pace of narration is particularly important for users. We’ve been experimenting with giving the learner control of the pace of the content in one of our RLOs and we’d love you to give us some feedback on this functionality.

We’re delighted that Dr. Nick Napper produced an excellent video for us introducing his research on visual learning. He also addresses some of the points around use of text and images and the importance of using visual support that is educationally functional. In case you missed it it’s the last step in this week one of the course. It’s great to see some of you already thinking about the topics you’d like to work on with us in the coming weeks. It’s going to be really exciting to see how all your projects develop.
