Video coaching and practice

In this video, we consider how the use of video and coaching might help a teacher to engage in deliberate practice.

Deliberate practice is described by Deans for Impact as ‘practice that is purposeful and designed to maximise improvement’ (2016). Most teachers’ practice takes place within the high-stakes environment of a classroom filled with pupils. Whilst this practice can still be helpful if also accompanied by immediate and specific feedback from an expert teacher, it is helpful for learning to also have those lower-stakes opportunities to support growth and provide a sense of achievement.

There are ways in which we can provide teachers with the kind of practice that can set them on the journey to expertise and one of these is the use of video for self-reflection, coaching and feedback.

Tools such as IRIS Connect allow teachers to record their lesson practice via an app; enabling them to review their practice with perspective it’s not easy to achieve during a lesson. Selecting an area of practice to focus on means that any engagement with a colleague as a mentor or coach means their feedback on your lesson is evidence-based and easier to act upon with the footage to support it. In this video, we hear from primary school teachers and leaders about how this tool, along with the in-ear coaching feature that enables in-lesson feedback to the teacher, has influenced their practice.

Thank you to IRIS Connect for this footage.
