Skip to 0 minutes and 7 secondsWe started with a very specific project and that was to support the 8 NQTs that we have had and I think certainly the quality of their teaching within a year, I think the progress they've made is extraordinary. We wanted to set up a program that allowed them to develop as quickly and as effectively as possible so they decided to use Iris Connect in addition to their existing lesson study to develop a unique program to keep those 9 on track. Feedback is instantaneous, you can see then and there the evidence of the lesson and you can go back straightaway and pinpoint the key parts.

Skip to 0 minutes and 38 secondsIt's no longer a case of just having one person's perception of the lesson, you can see clear visual evidence there about what happened in the lesson and highlight the key parts, whether it be good or bad. I think it gives a real honest account of my teaching. One of the really key things for us is some of the in ear coaching work that is happening that staff can try something straightaway without having to go back, have the feedback and then go back in and remember to do it at the right time.

Skip to 1 minute and 11 secondsIf you've got the in ear coaching, like Mike will say right, you can try this now because it might work and this would be the nice time to try it, it's up to you if you want to try it and you're like yeah, you know what I'll give it a go and actually you can see the effect of it and you're like ah, that really works really well. We're now in a position in the school where we want to train some of our teachers to become coaches as well because their practice is in a place where they know a lot and they've got plenty to share with other teachers and so it's a case of developing our practice for coaching.

Skip to 1 minute and 37 secondsThe CPD of staff impacts on the quality of education that we can provide for children and that's what we're here for our school motto is positive thinkers and lifelong learners and that's what we are trying to equip our children to be and we also want our staff to be that as well. I think it's been brilliant to feed through and actually have evidence of that to share with colleagues and leadership alike so you can really see here's one stage how I was at the beginning of the year and here's who I am now and it's just been fantastic to have that actual evidence of that, rather than just a feeling inside so it's just nice to show off.

Video coaching and practice

In this video, we consider how the use of video and coaching might help a teacher to engage in deliberate practice.

Deliberate practice is described by Deans for Impact as ‘practice that is purposeful and designed to maximise improvement’ (2016). Most teachers’ practice takes place within the high-stakes environment of a classroom filled with pupils. Whilst this practice can still be helpful if also accompanied by immediate and specific feedback from an expert teacher, it is helpful for learning to also have those lower-stakes opportunities to support growth and provide a sense of achievement.

There are ways in which we can provide teachers with the kind of practice that can set them on the journey to expertise and one of these is the use of video for self-reflection, coaching and feedback.

Tools such as IRIS Connect allow teachers to record their lesson practice via an app; enabling them to review their practice with perspective it’s not easy to achieve during a lesson. Selecting an area of practice to focus on means that any engagement with a colleague as a mentor or coach means their feedback on your lesson is evidence-based and easier to act upon with the footage to support it. In this video, we hear from primary school teachers and leaders about how this tool, along with the in-ear coaching feature that enables in-lesson feedback to the teacher, has influenced their practice.

Thank you to IRIS Connect for this footage.
