This week you have:

  • Discovered what we mean by the terms emergency planning and emergency preparedness;
  • Explored the impact of preparedness on an effective and ineffective response; and
  • Investigated the relationships between different types of emergency and how best to prepare an appropriate response.

We now understand that emergency preparedness describes the overall structure for ensuring that an organisation is ready to respond to a disruptive challenge, whereas emergency planning describes the detailed arrangements and process for responding to a specific event.

Although the terms are different they must be closely related, with the emergency plan forming an integral element of the preparedness framework.

We also now understand that there are different types of emergency and they have different causes. This, in turn, influences the approach to preparing and planning for the response to an emergency.
