As such, it is worth pausing to reflect on what you have covered:

  • You can now read early modern numerals.
  • You have an appreciation for early modern monetary systems.
  • You are aware of the range of letter shapes and how they were deployed.
  • You have discovered two archaic letter shapes – the thorn and yogh – and their usage.

In addition to your palaeography skills, your knowledge of early modern Scottish society has deepened considerably:

  • You have looked at the survival of the kirk session records.
  • You have acquired an understanding of their language, structure, nature and contents.
  • You have seen the Perth kirk session in action.

These are huge steps forward – well done!

Next week you will learn key research and transcription techniques which will help you better engage with Scotland’s records. You will also get the chance to put your new skills to the test!
