Wrap up

This week we have looked at how energy can be exchanged by a system and its environment in the form of heat and flow energy. I explained that heat transfer comes in three types: conduction, convection and radiation. We observed that many machines operate with flow across their system boundaries and can be considered to be in a steady state, which leads to the steady flow energy equation (SFEE) that is a special case of the first law of thermodynamics. We can use the SFEE in the analysis of devices such as hair-dryers and jet engines.

What’s Next?

Next week the second law of thermodynamics will be introduced along with an explanation of why it controls and limits everything we do.
