Now that you have completed the exercise, take a look at how Erla structured the introduction to her essay.

4 – Over the last few decades there has been a significant growth in tourism world-wide because of globalisation, which has made it easier to travel. We start with a statement about the growth of tourism worldwide.
1 – As part of human experience, travellers are seeking more exotic places, and Iceland has become a popular destination, increasing in popularity in the last decade. Then a move from the general to the specific – a focus on tourism in Iceland.
8 – After facing a deep and harmful financial crisis in 2008, tourism has become an important industry for Iceland. The idea of tourism as an economic activity is introduced.
3 – This shift in arrivals to Iceland has led to increased economic growth. Factors which affect this growth include type of facility, tourist spending and investment.  
6 – According to Ólafsdottir (2013) the annual number of tourists has doubled since the year 2000 with annual growth of 7.3%. Statistics (and their sources) are added to provide evidence of this increase in economic activity, Firstly statistics about past performance…
5 – From 2012, the number of foreign visitors is expected to increase from 670,000 to 1,500,000 before 2023. (The Boston Consulting Group, 2013). … and then predictions about future growth.
7 – Although there are some problems when tourism grows too quickly, namely weak governance and environmental damage, the benefits for the economy are significant and can open up a variety of opportunities for the country. While the economic benefits of increased numbers of tourists are obvious, this sentence mentions some negative impact, suggesting that the essay will provide a balanced argument.
2 – The aim of this essay is to consider the economic impact of tourism in Iceland and discuss whether it is essential for the economy. Finally, the introduction ends with an overview of the structure of the essay, linking the introduction with the rest of the essay.
