Pronunciation and language change: the STRUT-vowel

Many English words are pronounced differently than the way in which they are written. The culprit is language change. Watch Laura Rupp explain more.

In English, many words are not pronounced like they are written. The mismatch is due to various language changes that have occurred in the history of English. In this video we will focus on the development and pronunciation of the STRUT-vowel.

After having watched the video, you will have a better understanding of the reason for unexpected pronunciations and you will know how to pronounce the STRUT-vowel.

Note: in the video, the IPA-transcription of the vowels in the words ‘womb’ and ‘woman’ have inadvertently been swapped: ‘womb’ = /uː/ and ‘woman’ /ʊ/.
