Overview of the week

In the first week, we looked at what is evaluation and the role of evaluation and reflection in enhancing learning and teaching in higher education. Once you have decided to evaluate your practice, you need to narrow down to a specific aspect of your teaching or educational design, and work out how to carry out the evaluation.

Our focus this week is on:

  • your perspectives (or position) of evaluation
  • data sources for evaluation with a focus on the sources of feedback (or lenses)
  • methods to collect data that will inform evaluation (that you will practice when undertaking your own evaluation)
  • the conceptualisation that feedback is data and what the role of such data is in the evaluative process.

The process of systematic evaluation is core to the practice of enhancing learning and teaching in higher education. To help work out how to evaluate, you need to ask yourself these questions:

  1. What is the purpose of evaluation (what are the key questions)?
  2. Who are the stakeholders?
  3. What are the most appropriate sources of evidence?
  4. What is the most appropriate methodology to answer your questions?

The last two questions can be considered the ‘how to’ carry out an evaluation and are what we cover this week.
