Why is the story of “a mad old man who imagines himself to be a knight errant” so popular? Dr Florian Lippert talked about Cervantes’ Don Quixote this week, and over at 1843 Magazine you can find an article on our fascination with this character.
Modernity and nature
Here’s another example of modernity’s relationship to nature, in addition to Dr Alexander and Dr Milder’s discussions: Bucharest’s Văcăreşti park. Abandoned and untouched by humans after the collapse of Nicolae Ceauşescu’s regime in 1989, it is now “one of Romania’s most diverse ecosystems.”
By way of contrast: the New York Review of Books highlights Roberto Burle Marx, “the Builder of Jungles”, who designed many gardens and parks, mostly outside Europe.
We hope to see you again next week..
