Skip to 0 minutes and 7 secondsThis week you have examined Europe as a cultural project. After watching the lecture videos, reading suggested articles, and participating in debates, you were able to see beyond the idea that there is one and homogeneous European culture. You were able to recognize that Europe and European culture is fluid and constructed, through both practices of the EU and national elites and the everyday experiences and activities of European citizens.

Skip to 0 minutes and 39 secondsNext week, you will learn to identify what role religion plays in European politics and society. You will evaluate if and how religion and secularism can coexist in the European context. You will develop innovative proposals about how to approach religious diversities in Europe.

Summary and preview

Every week, Dr Senka Neuman-Stanivukovic summarises the week’s discussions on the various constructions of European culture. This week, we’ve seen that various actors play a role in these constructions and that they challenge each other’s perceptions. We ended the week with reflecting on the political role of culture and the arts.

Next week, we’ll be looking into the role religion plays in Europe. Religion plays an important role in many people’s lives, and has since the September 11, 2001 attacks on the World Trace Center in New York been a hotly debated topic. Together with Professor Martin Tamcke and Dr Lars Klein from Georg-August-Universität in Göttingen, we’ll examine the place of religion in Europe. We hope to see you again next week!
