Case Study: Jean
In the previous steps, we explored exercise prescription for cardiovascular disease and for type 2 diabetes. Take a look at this fictional scenario, reflect on Jean’s concerns, and answer the questions below:
Jean has hypertension, a high BMI (31 kg/m2), and type 2 diabetes mellitus. She is self employed as a florist and reports being active all day long in her shop “going to and fro between the workshop and tending to customers”.
When probed, Jean admits that this activity rarely lasts 10 consecutive minutes, and although it can render her out of breath, she does not work up a sweat. She is sedentary at home in the evenings.
- How would you ensure prescribing exercise to Jean would be safe?
- What type of lifestyle modifications would you suggest?
- What type of exercise prescription would you suggest?
