Skip to 0 minutes and 5 secondsHello, my name is Marisa.
Skip to 0 minutes and 8 secondsI'll be your educator for this course, "Exploring Copyright: History, Culture, Industry". We hear and read a lot about copyright today. We see the word and its symbol, but it still isn't so easy to get its meaning. This course provides the background and information to give meaning to the word copyright. It seeks to help you better understand how the concept and legal frameworks were built throughout history to become an essential element for creative and cultural industries today. This will enable you to learn more about the creative works protected by copyright and enjoyed by everyone in cinemas, books, museums, television, concert venues, phones, computers, and anywhere culture is consumed all over the world.
Skip to 1 minute and 3 secondsWe'll see how authors have fought their battles to be able to earn a living from their work. We will examine the role of the law in creating the environment where this goal could be accomplished. While you may not be an author or an artist, copyright and the existing legal framework protecting author's rights is part of our daily life. The system is well-established, and it has proven to provide important economic benefits. Creators, those who conceive and produce the vibrant core of creative and cultural industries, have been enjoying a share of this economy. And what about you? Do you think creators should be compensated for making their artistic works available to the public?
Skip to 1 minute and 53 secondsBefore going ahead, I will tell you my story and why I'm here. I want to share with you my passion for the subject, and my interest about those who feed our imagination, create the soundtracks of our daily lives, awake our emotions, and fuel the creative industries.
Welcome to the course
Meet the educator
Welcome to the course. I hope to answer your questions and help satisfy your curiosity about this interesting subject.
I’ve been a teacher on copyright at the University, worked as the CEO of a Brazilian composers’ association and served on the Board of Directors of CISAC, a global organisation representing 239 creators’ associations in 123 countries.
I also have years of experience as a professional musician and music teacher. I taught piano classes, reading and writing music, as well as ear training. It’s always good to remember that listening is one of the most important things in all kinds of learning; not only in music.
Recently, I decided to go back to my roots and dedicate myself to what I do best: helping people to learn about a subject with which I have been deeply involved. I have great pleasure in sharing my experience and knowledge with you, while at the same time learning from you via the discussions and social activities offered in the course.
If you wish, you may follow me to keep track of my comments throughout the course.
