Meet the team

Professor Nicky Milner is the lead educator on this course. Nicky is the Head of Department of Archaeology and Co-Director of the recent excavations at Star Carr with Dr Chantal Conneller and Dr Barry Taylor.

A large team of people contributed to the outcomes of the project, and you will see some of them on the films throughout this course:

• Dr Aimee Little is a Lecturer in Archaeology and Director of the York Experimental Archaeology Research (YEAR) Centre. She worked on the Star Carr project as an expert in microwear analysis
• Dr Kirsty High is a Research fellow in Chemistry. The subject of her PhD was to investigate the deterioration of organic archaeological artefacts at Star Carr.
• Dr Charlie Rowley is a researcher at York having recently completed her PhD in flint analysis and soil geochemistry at Flixton Island and Star Carr.
• Mike Bamforth is the Project manager for the project. He is also a specialist in wetland archaeology and prehistoric woodworking and carried out analysis of the wood and wooden artefacts from Star Carr.
• Dr Ben Elliott who has been our expert in Mesolithic antler working and a supervisor on site.
• Neil Gevaux is our computing expert and he has helped create many of the digital outputs for the project including models of the headdresses.

A number of team members are also helping to facilitate this course and will be replying to your comments as we go along:

• Dr Andy Needham worked at Star Carr for many years. He was a supervisor on site as well as working on the deterioration of deposits and the analysis of the engraved pendant. He is also an expert in experimental archaeology.
• Becky Knight also worked at Star Carr as a research technician. Becky is a zooarchaeologist and worked on the animal bones from the site. Becky has written and contributed to a number of a number of chapters in the Star Carr monograph on this subject.
• Dr Steph Piper is an archaeologist focusing on the Mesolithic period and stone tools. She has also excavated in the Vale of Pickering with members of the Star Carr team.
