What comes next: week 2 and beyond

In this article, we discuss how the rest of the course will unfold, and the connection between the weeks.

During this week we introduced some fundamental notions.

For instance, we described some aspects of the brain and of brain metabolism. We also started to analyze why our cognitive processes can relate to eating behaviours, both by influencing them and by being influenced by them.

In the next week we will discuss the reward system and food addiction. These two themes are linked, as food addiction (and, indeed, all addictions) can’t be understood without understanding the concept of reward.

Food addiction is a controversial topic – how can we be addicted to something every living being needs ? After all, no one has ever introduced the concept of oxygen addiction. We will discuss with a psychotherapist and try to understand if this concept is useful in the treatment of eating disorders.

On the other hand, some studies investigated the idea of food addiction, and found evidence in animals and humans alike. We will show both sides of the picture and discuss why food addiction can (or cannot) be an useful concept to better understand human behaviour.
