I'm serving as a Deputy Dean for Administrative Affairs at the School of Agricultural Resources at Chulalongkorn University Bangkok, Thailand. Thank you. Hi, everyone. Thank you. Today we're going to talk a bit about regional governance, actors and priorities. So the first question is looking at-- what do you feel are the biggest challenges we have in Southeast Asia for achieving sustainable food systems?

Skip to 0 minutes and 49 secondsWhen we talk about agriculture and food system, actually, our school, we take a holistic view, We look at the whole value chain of the agriculture system, starting from the input to the farms. And at the end, we have the consumers. It's a whole chain. And in this whole chain we see that the weakest link or weakest component in the chain is the farmers. So that will be a challenge to upgrade their skill, their quality of life. The farmers will be the target for the first priority to do anything about sustainable farming. And then I guess my final question is, then-- talking of your institute as well-- is what can universities do?

First, educate a new generation for system farming, and second area is to do research. And probably the third one-- an important one-- community service. Thank you. Welcome to Week 3

Last week we began looking at Southeast Asia and where the region might be heading socio-economically and in terms of natural resources, environmental change and, of course, food systems. This week we turn our attention to the governance of food systems and key actors for change at different scales across the region.

To begin this week, Dr. Sompong Sirisoponsilp, of Chulalongkorn University School of Agricultural Resources, joins Lead Educator Matthew Fielding to discuss some key food systems and natural resource governance actors.

During this week keep in mind the lessons from previous weeks, particularly concerning the diversity within the region, and the transformations occurring. We will explore how the trends and drivers we examined in Week 2 present challenges for decision-makers striving to achieve sustainable practices.
