Future tense with sille

The verb sille (shall) can be used to express an intention or a future tense.

This is the present tense of sille:

ik sil
do silst
hy – sy/se – it sil
wy/we sille
jim sille
sy/se sille
jo sille

Word order

The verb sille is a modal verb and so the construction follows the same pattern:

subject – sille – rest – action verb

For example:

Ik sil drave. I am going to run.
Ik sil oer in healoere te sporten. In half an hour I am going to do some exercise.
Hy sil takom jier wer studearje. Next year he is going to study again.

Meaning

Sentences with sille and an action verb express an intention, like ‘going to’:

Wat sille jim útfine? What are you going to do?
Ik sil yn ‘e bibleteek studearje. I am going to study in the library.
