In revisiting The Virginia Festival of the Book, we will now continue to use the case study to further examine and understand how to determine a completion date and critical path. Feel free to revisit The Importance of Project Planning in Action video (The Importance of Planning) and the The Virginia Festival of the Book article (in Scoping and Identifying Dependencies) to review the previous information.

As a reminder from the previous article on scoping and the work breakdown structure, there were five key milestones to hit:

September 23: Announce ticketed events

September 25: Tickets and book fair tables go on sale

October 1: Deadline for submission of program proposal

January 15: Schedule is published online

March 18: Festival begins

Project Plan

Overall, the project plan consisted of 164 tasks. Of these, only five tasks were critical, as shown in Figure 2. See Exhibit 2 for a complete Gantt Chart of the tasks. Review the attached document below under “Documents” for the VFOB critical path (Figure 2).

After reviewing this information, visit the discussion questions to discuss the completion date and critical path of the project.

If you are interested in accessing the full case study article, please see the PDF attachment at the bottom of this page under “Downloads.” You’ll see at the end of the case study Exhibit 2 is an illustrative example of a complete Gantt Chart of the tasks.
