Practical example of relationship between People and GeoHealth

Case Study PHFI

This is the last step where we will dive further in the CARRS study (CArdiometabolic Risk Reduction in South Asia).

Having a specific group that focused on GIS allows us to group skills and knowledge and maintain the necessary expertise together. As the GIS group is within an institute for health and even linked directly to a specialist Cardiometabolic center, there are direct links between people with health expertise and GIS specialists. This makes collaboration very easy.

Our team for the CARRS- GIS project comprised of the following people:

  • Field data collector
  • Research fellow
  • Data manager
  • Project manager
  • Technical consultant
  • Principal Investigators

The project had 2 field investigators who carried out the primary data (Household & points of interest) collection in the study area. The field investigators were graduates and provided training in GPS based data collection.

The data manager was involved in monitoring the data collection process, but was also responsible for the integration of spatial data with the health and demographic data and the creation of the spatial database. The database manager worked in close consultation with the Research fellow and has a MSc degree in Computer Science.

The research fellow (RF) verified the collected location data using Google Earth in consultation with the field data collectors. The RF also carried out preliminary GIS analysis using ArcGIS and other software. The RF was a post graduate in remote sensing and GIS application.

As you have seen in previous steps the project manager oversaw the design and implementation of the study and ensured that project mile stones were met and the staff were adequately trained. He also supervised the analysis and preparation of manuscripts for dissemination. He has Master’s Degree in Public Health and additional training in the application of GIS in public health.

The technical consultant provided inputs on the design of the study and overall application of remote sensing and GIS tools. He is a professor of remote sensing and geography with the over 15 years of experience.

The principal investigator of the study gave overall leadership and ensured that the study was in line to achieve the research objectives the PI also liaised with government authorities to communicate the findings for framing policy guidelines.

A team combining different expertise and backgrounds, works really well in the GeoHealth domain like in our CARRS project.
