Managing the barriers to engagement with cataract services

The cataract surgical rate has remained low across the world, but most notably in low and middle-income countries. In this step we look at the reasons why and how we can better manage the barriers, including patients not coming for surgery and ineffective or inefficient eye care units.

As you watch, think about the kinds of provider and patient barriers you have experienced. Counselling patients to accept cataract surgery often requires creative approaches. What successful approaches are you aware of, and who is involved in this activity?

Provider barriers can be overcome by strengthening management of the eye care team. What evidence or information could be used to alert the team to change their approach?
