‘Equality and Difference’ with Madhu Krishnan

Watch Madhu Krishnan discuss the ideas of ‘diversity’ and ‘difference’, exploring them as either positive or negative, depending on the context.

Welcome to the second theme of this week, in which Madhu discusses the ideas of ‘diversity’ and ‘difference’, exploring how the terms are seen as either positive or negative, depending on the context.

We see many examples of diversity and difference in the film; Stokes Croft in Bristol is less than 2 miles from the much more affluent area of Clifton yet visually and culturally they are clearly very different. You may have similar experiences of cities or locations being ‘contact zones’ of different ideas, beliefs, cultures and lifestyles.

While you are watching the video, consider these questions. You can take a few notes for yourself, or add your thoughts to the comments and join the discussion.

  • Are ‘difference’ and ‘diversity’ the same thing, or not?

  • If not, in what way do they mean different things?

  • How do you think the two terms are used differently in popular culture or the media?
