‘Democracy and citizenship’ with Diego Acosta

In this video, Diego Acosta talks about democracy and national citizenship in relation to the concepts of global citizenship.

In this last section of the course, Diego Agosta brings us back to some fundamental questions around citizenship: in this case national citizenship.

We began the course by asking you what you thought global citizenship entails. Now that we have explored various different ideas, challenges, and debates around this topic we end with a similar question:

How do nations decide who is a citizen, and who is not?

Diego ends this video with a very important question:

  • Is democracy possible, when certain residents of a country continue to be denied a vote?

While you watch, you may want to consider that question, as well as why citizenship, and the right to vote, is so important to a person’s sense of belonging to a nation.
