Introduction to this online course
Welcome to this online course on global governance.
My name is Cédric Dupont and I am a professor of political science and director of the executive education department at the Graduate Institute of International and Development Studies in Geneva. I have been researching and writing about international governance and international political economy (with a focus on trade and monetary integration processes and related governance issues) as well as about strategic international interactions, including international negotiations.
The course is four weeks long with each week organised around a big question:
- What is global governance?
- Do we really need global governance?
- What is the global regulatory toolkit?
- Future of global governance : what would be an optimal model?
The course presents processes and institutions which aim to manage global challenges and issues. It highlights the multiplicity of stakeholders involved in those processes, as well as the variation in governance solutions across policy domains, space and time. Given the current interdependence between nations, an understanding of global governance is essential to anyone interested or involved in world affairs. This course aims to provide you with a compass to navigate an interconnected world.
The estimated amount of time is 3 hours of work per week. You can organise yourself freely, and choose to connect on FutureLearn and complete the steps whenever is convenient for you during the week.
We recommend that you try to work regularly week per week, so that you can progress together, support each other and have productive discussions.
To begin with, you can use the next discussion step to introduce yourself to us and your fellow learners. Where are you from? What do you do? Why did you decide to participate in this course?
You can use this opportunity to get familiar with the dynamics of FutureLearn discussions. See what story gets the most “likes”, and follow people whose posts interest you.
Welcome again to the course, we look forward to exchanging with you!
