Skip to 0 minutes and 8 secondsConstruction itself is global. There are a lot of issues we can identify but some of them are the present one, the current one you say like contemporary is global warning. It’s an issue that is affecting construction. Another thing we can also look at is process improvement. A lot of industry have improved processes let alone construction. If we look at a building that was built in the early 19th Century and now residential building will have not changed. What is happening is because of lack of research or we are not doing enough and nothing is a material itself, brick is brick since you have been born, have you seen brick change. Brick has not changed, aircraft has changed.

Skip to 0 minutes and 46 secondsA lot of things have changed. What has happened to construction and it’s only research that can bring this into reality. The global issues I see in my eyes currently that researchers are focusing on is technology adaptation, environmental sustainability and human resource problems, which means workers productivity, late payments. In technology adaptation we’ve been seeing research regarding the barriers on implementing BIM and how do we solve that. And research on how do we get professionals to work through BIM. When it comes to environmental sustainability now we see buildings especially in the UK. They are moving from the traditional reinforced concrete building into steel structure which heavily reduces the construction waste and also in the long run saves money.

Skip to 1 minute and 43 secondsThe region where I come from, Nigeria specifically, you know, we have issues like corruption, bureaucracy, you know, cost overrun, you know, and a host of others, political issues, political influences in construction and so on. Jordan is basically the safest place in the heart of the Middle East so what we are seeing lately is a boom in the construction industry which was mainly from having refugees from the neighbouring country which led to the fact that we need a lot of construction projects to cover and shelter these people. So that being said, with that boom happening, there have been several issues rising like cost overruns on projects, project delays, productivity, health and safety.

Skip to 2 minutes and 28 secondsThese all issues have been currently been studied so we can solve these challenges and improve the industry so we can shelter the refugees. Our issues go more than the construction industry and that’s impacted the industry itself. We have many challenges, I mean, one of the main ones is trying to find professional staff In general, from the trades all the way through to managers and architects and engineers. We’ve got a big skills gap and that will be reflective on the quality of staff over the next 10 to 15 years I would have thought.

Global perspectives of contemporary issues

In this section you will explore views from professionals from within the industry highlighting the impact of research, before identifying the role that ethics plays in the industry.

In this video Dr George Agyekum-Mensah is joined by Ghazi Alabbadi from Jordan and Ozavize Banwo from Nigeria (both PhD students at Coventry University) and Richard Peace, a Project Manager at the construction firm Galliford Try.

They give their own perspectives on what research is being carried out at present and what areas require future investigation.

Within the industry there are many contemporary issues. These can be separated into construction-specific issues, such as processes, innovation and materials, and social, political and resource issues in construction:

Processes, innovation and materials Social, political and resource issues
Site skill requirements Lack of qualified workers
Project complexity Socio-political pressures
New technologies Legal issues
Material safety Ethical concerns
Government standards Environmental concerns
Process improvement and automation
Cost and contracts management

For the successful execution of any construction project, these issues should be considered.
