How it works
Challenges in Antibiotic Resistance: Gram Negative Bacteria
Identify, diagnose and treat gram negative bacterial infections.
Gram negative bacteria (GNB) are a group of bacteria that can cause infection and toxic reaction in patients, yet are difficult to differentiate and treat with antibiotics due to their structure.
This online course - led by experts from the British Society for Antimicrobial Chemotherapy (BSAC) - looks at this challenge. You’ll explore the microbiology of gram-negative bacteria, and find out how to identify, classify, diagnose and treat GNB infections.
You’ll also look at occurrences of GNB and antibiotic resistance worldwide, and understand the impact they have on health and economic outcomes.
Syllabus
Week 1
Infections caused by Gram negative bacteria
Welcome and introduction
This first activity provides you with some useful background information.
Setting the scene
In this section you will learn basic microbiological and epidemiological concepts of Gram negative bacteria (GNB) as well as the spectrum of infectious diseases that are caused by these microorganisms.
Week 2
Antimicrobial Resistance in Gram Negative Bacteria
Mechanisms of antimicrobial resistance
We will now begin to explore what resistance is and it's impact
Epidemiology of Gram negative bacteria
This activity will explore basic explain the patterns of Gram-negative resistance worldwide and introduce tools to explore regional rates of antimicrobial resistance.
The burden and consequences of antimicrobial resistance
In this activity we will explore the threat posed by antimicrobial resistance.
Week 3
Antimicrobial therapy for Gram Negative Bacteria: from bench to bedside
Revisiting Cases #1 and #2
The educators will discuss facts about the cases you saw in Week 1 and the best antimicrobial therapy to treat them.
Case #3: Vincent
In this activity we will concentrate on therapy for Case #3: Vincent, from Week 1.
