Next week

We hope you have enjoyed the first week of the course and gained new insight into not only Hans Christian Andersen’s creative work but also the man behind the writer and his contemporary society.

Next week, we will introduce you to the folk tale genre and the analysis models you need in order to analyse, discuss and interpret Hans Christian Andersen’s fairy tales. You will also test your analysis skills on the folk tale ‘The Blue Light’ and compare it to ‘The Tinderbox’ written by Hans Christian Andersen.

As we start exploring Hans Christian Andersen’s fairy tales you will discover that these, in some cases, resemble the folk tale closely and, in other cases, digress from it. You will discover that some of the author’s fairy tales are very modern while others are not. You will see that biblical themes are present in some fairy tales but absent in others.

We look forward to studying the many aspects of Hans Christian Andersen’s fairy tales together with you in the remaining five weeks of the course.
