Overview of the course

What does a week’s worth of content look like?

In this first week, we’ll have a general introduction to the Hans Christian Andersen Centre and its close collaboration with the Hans Christian Andersen Museum and the Childhood Home. You will also get to know the man behind the writer and get an introduction to Hans Christian Andersen’s literary works. In Week 2, we will help you get ready for the discussions, analyses and interpretations of fairy tales that will follow in the subsequent weeks by introducing you to the fairy tale genre and useful analysis models. In Week 2, you will also get the opportunity to practice your analysis skills, so that you are ready for active participation in the rest of the course.

In each subsequent week, we’ll be exploring one or two specific fairy tales, analysing their themes and structures and discussing where they comply with and where they digress from the fairy tale genre.

Each week we will provide you with all of the material and activities on your To Do list. In the first section, there’ll be a short introduction and links to the week’s focus fairy tales. Then follows a video on each of the fairy tales in which one of the Hans Christian Andersen experts presents the characters and the themes. Furthermore, key passages from the fairy tales are read aloud. In the succeeding steps, we will engage you in discussions, analyses and interpretations of the focus fairy tales. Each week ends with the expert’s analysis and interpretation of the focus fairy tales allowing you to assess your own analysis and interpretation skills.

Analysis models and background Information

Weeks 1 and 2 include information, materials and models that will help you discuss, analyse and interpret Hans Christian Andersen’s fairy tales. You can come back to study and use the information, materials and models at any point during the course.

Quizzes and the peer-reviewed assignment

Some weeks include questions that allow you to test how much you’ve learnt about Hans Christian Andersen and his fairy tales. You will be able to answer these questions based on your learning from the video content (transcripts of the videos are also provided) and on your own readings of the fairy tales. In the final week there will be an opportunity for you to write an essay in which you reflect on and discuss Hans Christian Andersen’s topicality and cross-cultural relevance taking your starting point in our discussions, analyses and interpretations of the Hans Christian Andersen fairy tales we have explored during this course. Your essay will be peer-reviewed by one of your fellow learners, and you will have the opportunity to also review someone else’s work.

Discussions, comments and feedback

You can leave comments with reactions, feedback, questions and further thoughts on any part of the course, including the resources and the videos. The weekly discussions, analyses and interpretations will give you the chance to have conversations on Hans Christian Andersen’s fairy tales with learners from all over the world. You can post quick observations on the themes, or delve deeper with a more involved study of the questions; the choice is yours.The learning principle of the course is peer learning where you learn by reading and responding to the comments of fellow learners and by posting comments yourself. We therefore encourage you to engage in the online discussions and contribute with your own ideas and thoughts since this will very much be an integral part of your learning.
