Skip to 0 minutes and 10 secondsWelcome to week 2 of this course, Understanding Innovation in the Healthcare Sciences. In week 1, we learned about how innovation and service improvement is defined by the NHS and other global healthcare systems and what constitutes an innovation or service improvement project, and how these differ from traditional research such as that undertaken in universities. Original research is very important. But here we consider how applying research can lead to improvements in patient care across all the healthcare science disciplines, whether you work in a life science, physiological science, or physical science discipline. In week 2 you will learn about how to identify and find support to help you as the innovator, especially if you are new to innovation.

Skip to 1 minute and 2 secondsWe will firstly ask you to reflect on your own knowledge and what support is available to innovators within your own organisation. We will then consider sources of local support before moving to consider regional and national support for innovation and service improvement. During week 2, you will also learn the steps involved in developing your innovation proposal. This is a very important step as it helps you and your team be clear on what you're trying to achieve. Your proposal can also help to secure funding, whether that be internally from your own organisation or external government or charity funding.

Skip to 1 minute and 46 secondsTo end week 2, you will learn some helpful techniques to help you communicate your proposal to all your stakeholders, including patients and users of your service. You will also be able to identify what support mechanisms are available to you, the innovator, how to prepare an innovation proposal, and importantly, how to communicate your plans to your patients and service users. The education team hope you enjoy week 2 of this course.

Welcome to Week 2

In this short video, Dr McDowell recaps the learning from Week 1 and introduces the topics to be covered in Week 2. You will learning about ways to identify support available for innovators, as well as how to begin developing your proposal for your innovation. You will also be introduced to the different ways of communicating about your innovation.

Can you articulate how is innovation defined? Consider the different types of innovation project other learners have proposed, in Step 1.13 and add your views to the comments section below. Please ensure your comments are constructive and supportive to the other learner(s).
