Good organisational leadership can be key to influencing positive strategic outcomes, driving improvement and innovation across organisations.

On this course, you’ll learn about the general concept of leadership, going on to explore practical examples of innovative management across a range of healthcare settings.

You’ll examine real-life case studies of improvement and innovation projects drawn from a global context – including the UK, North America, Australia and Africa – to better understand patient and public leadership, as well as the need for great healthcare leadership on the front line.

Skip to 0 minutes and 13 seconds The need for healthcare improvement has arisen from the concerns of policymakers, clinicians, and managers around the world. Preventable hospital errors are now the third largest cause of death in the United States, and also there are major variations in our own National Health Service in the treatment of things like cancer and dementia, depending on where you live. Healthcare improvement, essentially, is the science of how we continuously improve the quality of our health services to ensure that they are safer, more patient led, and more efficient. We’ll look at the tools and techniques. We will also look at the implementation side of that, bringing in ideas from organisational theory from leadership, from management to try and understand those processes.

Skip to 0 minutes and 56 seconds This course is unique in the international case studies that we’ll be using. For example, primary care reforms in China. Clinical networks in Kenya. Lean systems implementation in Australia. And this course will have contributors from across the spectrum of management and medical research. You will also be hearing from well-known practitioners and experts. For example John Øvretveit from the Karolinska Institute in Scandinavia. And also from Lynne Maher the leading innovator in health improvement, previously working for the NHS in England. This course will be structured across six weeks.

Skip to 1 minute and 30 seconds Each week will cover a substantive topic: we look at themes such as leadership, clinical networks, systems redesign. You’ll be part of a learning community of global clinicians, managers, and practitioners interacting with each other through this course. The outcomes from this course are going to be three-fold. You’ll learn about the full range of tools and techniques associated with healthcare improvement. You’re also going to learn about the challenges of implementing those tools and techniques, drawing on ideas both from clinical science and from management theory. Last but not least, you will learn about the international context of healthcare improvement in different health systems in different cultures. We are passionate about healthcare improvement and innovation and we want to share that with you.
