Before diving into the content, take a moment to review a few important principles that will help you get the most out of this course.

Who the course is designed for

Our courses are designed for young adult and adult learners from around the world who are interested in taking the next step towards starting a career in games development. This course is designed for those who have acquired or are in the process of acquiring technical skills for games development and are ready to start preparing to find their first job in games.

Learning with others

You’ll be learning with and from other learners. That means you’ll progress faster and get more from the course by engaging in topic-related conversations with other learners, sharing ideas and giving feedback. Prompts and questions for discussion will be shown in bold. Use the comments section to add your thoughts about any questions.

You can ‘like’ comments by other learners, and you can also follow other course participants who have similar interests to yours so that you can learn together and share experiences. Please see our guide to Using FutureLearn for some quick tips on getting the most out of your course.

How you will learn

This course will:

  • challenge you by sharing insights and experience from developers, studios and recruiters
  • develop your understanding of the skills used in games development
  • assess your own skills
  • provide practical steps for you to boost your skills

A non-competitive environment

The job market for games may be competitive but this is a non-competitive environment. You’ll be learning alongside people from around the world and you’ll get much more from the course if you share ideas that might help people.

How to get the most from the course

As you progress through the course, think about adopting the following principles:

  • Be curious — go and search for what developers say about working in games, applying for jobs and interviewing.
  • Be compassionate — help out your colleagues and they will help you.
  • Be constructive — it’s fine to disagree with other learners but please communicate in a way that points towards solutions

These are often key to developing successful games so it’s good to adopt these principles now. They will stand you in good stead.
