We’ve taken you on a long journey over the last four weeks. Let’s review what you’ve learned before you go.

Through the eyes of our four developers, you’ve discovered:

  • How the main roles function and work together in a typical game’s development cycle
  • The main technical and professional skills used by developers in studios, and how your skills map to a skills matrix for your chosen role
  • How the games job application process works, how studios might assess your application and how you might demonstrate your potential to do a job, including if you haven’t got 1st hand experience of every skill
  • What to expect from games interviews, how to prepare and practise for them, and what to ask.

Along the way you’ve tackled some big challenges, perhaps the hardest of which was assessing your own skills. I hope you’ll remember the advice from every single person we interviewed – there’s no such thing as the perfect candidate. All studios want to see is your potential to become a great member of a team that develops amazing games.

By the time you finish this course, I’ll have started my first job in a big games studio. It was a long road for me and for our developers, but it’s so worth it. I really hope you give it a go, work hard and keep resilient if you get knocked back, and that you get to start your career in games development too.

If you’re interested in learning more about games design and development before you take the plunge into applying for roles, why not try another FutureLearn course? You’ll find a few on games development such as Game Design and Development: Video Game Character Design from Abertay University.

Good luck!
