Next week on Identifying the Dead...

As well as a sneak peek at Week 3 we have a special announcement to make…

As you know, we have been working closely with crime writer Val McDermid and you will of course get your own copy of her short story written for this MOOC at the end of the course.

We would like to invite you to submit a piece of original artwork to be used for the cover of our short story. Little Brown are providing a signed copy of Val’s latest number one bestseller, ‘Splinter the Silence’, for the winning entry which will be selected by Val and announced at our final Expert Hang’oot’ on Friday 16 October.

The cover art could be based on some the activities you have taken part in for the course – like the final view of the grave drawing, it could be an ‘evidence’ photograph you have taken for the course, it’s entirely up to you.

Send your cover artwork to or post on our Facebook page using the hashtag #FLForensicIdCover.

The competition is now closed. Thank you to everyone who contributed. You will find out the winner in week 6 - but don’t jump ahead just yet! You don’t want to spoil the case!

And one more thing…

The Expert ‘Hang’oot’ on Friday 16 October will be LIVE from the Centre for Anatomy & Human Identification. You’ll get to chat to both Professor Sue Black and Val McDermid.

Details on how you join the LIVE Hang’oot’ and submit questions will be released on Monday October 12 and we will send you a reminder email in advance of the event.

You’ll definitely want cake for this one!
