Explore how to make Higher Education more inclusive

According to research by the UK government, disabled people are around half as likely to hold a degree-level qualification than people without disabilities. It raises an important question: how can we make education more inclusive?

On this course you will learn about different aspects of inclusion and digital accessibility experienced by students, teachers and support staff in Higher Education.

You’ll explore the barriers experienced by disabled students, the role of inclusive practices and hear firsthand from students about the impact inclusion has had on their studies.

  • Introduction to inclusive learning with students and staff perspective
  • How inclusive learning practices differ from individual adjustments
  • Creating inclusive learning and teaching materials using digital technologies
  • Inclusive library services, science, practical sessions and fieldwork
  • Setting inclusive assignments and assessments
  • Planning and encouraging inclusive collaborative learning activities

  • Describe the impact different options can make to disabled students when encountering a range of resources created to enhance their study skills
  • Explore insights into how best to share resources and communicate information and how to collaborate with students to allow for inclusion in different situations including libraries, labs and in examinations
  • Produce digital content to make learning and teaching inclusive

Who is the course for?

This course has been created for teachers and educators interested in inclusive practices, learning technologists and education design professionals. It will also be relevant for marketing and communications professionals working in training situations and those with disabilities who want to understand problems in education and how to overcome them.

Who will you learn with?

I am a Professor at the University of Southampton leading research and teaching about digital accessibility and advising universities and government organisations about inclusive learning and teaching

Senior Research Fellow and member of the ECS Accessibility Team. A Speech and Language Therapist with interests in Assistive Technologies and digital accessibility supporting those with disabilities.

I am an accessibility consultant and researcher. I collaborate with the University of Southampton to identify best practices for creating accessible and inclusive technologies within organisations.
