I am an assistant professor in HRM at the university of twente, my specializations are in team-based work, job design, new ways of working. Remember that HRM consists of two major building blocks. One is the organizational part and the other is the personnel part. The last module was called HRM flows and that is definitely on the personnel part of HRM. This module is focused on Job Design and job design is one of the core building blocks of the organizational part of HRM. Job design is a classic! The relevance of this intriguing HRM field can be marked by a movie, the movie of modern times, made by Charlie Chaplin back in 1936 already.

Skip to 0 minutes and 56 seconds This movie can be seen as a fundamental critique on mass industrialization like Fordism and its consequences for the position of factory workers. As a response to Taylor’s scientific management, and the bad working conditions of many workers in factories, a field of job design emerged. Many theories have been put forward, emphasizing the possibility of alternative work designs with better work promises for the workers. So, the field of job design deals with questions like, How to make a good job? What is a good job? And how do you motivate people?
