The importance of intercultural competence

Let’s take about 20 minutes and catch an overview of the importance to develop intercultural competence before we begin to take specific steps in starting intercultural development. In the first half of his TedX, Pellegrino Riccardi, a cross cultural expert, discusses how intercultural competency means that you, in cross cultural situations, do not assume your own assumptions are the same as culturally different others.

This is an additional video, hosted on YouTube.

Following viewing the video, please reflect on these four questions:

  1. How do you feel after watching the video?
  2. What did you learn from what Mr. Riccardi shared about perceiving that your own assumptions may not be the same as others who are culturally different from you?
  3. How does this understanding relate to the real world?
  4. What is the single most important reason for you to develop intercultural competence?

Please click on the comment button and share your responses to these four questions. Please list your responses in order by #1, 2, 3 and 4. Next, respond to the reflections or comments of 2 to 3 other learners.
