Today in this lecture we are going to study how social computing, internet of the things, and new technology in general are being used for helping to achieve healthy aging. First of all, as you can see in the second slide, we need to take into account that internet is becoming mobile because the use of internet is growing rapidly but mainly through the use of mobile technology. And this is something especially happening in the developing countries. Another area of growth in the internet is actually the demographics.

Skip to 0 minutes and 42 secondsMore and more people in the elder age, they are starting to use mobile technology especially WhatsApp and instant messaging. And this is something not only happening in North America or Europe. This is also happening in countries like India.

Skip to 1 minute and 2 secondsNow we are going to speak a little bit about the internet of the things for healthy aging. As you can see in the fifth slide, a technology for smart homes are not anymore some prototypes and research. You can go to a shop and you can buy wireless speaker systems, a smart thermostat, a smart lighting, smoke sensors, etc. And this is something growing every year and the big player like Google and Apple are all they are also getting into this business. As you can see in the sixth slide, here you have a diagram of how different technologies in the houses can help to make the home a more safe environment for there to live.

Skip to 1 minute and 49 secondsFor example, there have been put in sensor in the tiles to detect whether somebody fell down and then call the emergency system. There are also smoke detectors and C02 detector. This is very important for patients with alzheimer that they make forget that they are cooking something and to prevent a fire. And also a smart lighting has been tested so that when they wake up with the sensor in the bed, automatically will turn on the light so that they , elderly user, can find their way to the bathroom without felling down, etc. There are millions of technologies that have been used for creating a smart home for ambient assisted living.

Skip to 2 minutes and 45 secondsAnd in that paper, that you can see in the slide, you have a very nice overview about it. Then in the 7th slide, I would like to emphasize one type of technology that is growing in importance. That’s actually Robotics in ambient assisted living. There are many Robots are being tested to either help in the daily task of the house, like cleaning a moving heavy object, etc. and also you have through for a tele person. Like giraff which would allow the caregivier to connect to the elderly and have interaction regarding a medication or more mental issues, etc.

Skip to 3 minutes and 31 secondsLet’s speak now about Wearbles and Quantified stuff. As you can see in the slide 9. Wearables sometimes are not very well designed for the elderly users. And example are in the slide 15 etc. That we are trying in Sevile and what we found is because the way the elderly walk esepcially with disability, many of steps were not even counted. So now we can say that elderly were flying not walking. This is very important to take into consideration. If you you are aiming to use wearbles to promote physical activity among people with disability. Many of those devices are not designed for people with disabilty and therefore they are not very reliable to monitor the physical activity.

The way we walk when we are getting old, when we have hip replacement diffrence and those devices are not always very well designed for it. However, as you can see in the slide 10, you can leave sensors on something very useful for long term taking into consideration Then, gather the characteristics of the users. This is an example of smart spoon which actually has a sensor to recognize the tremble from somebody with Parkinson for example and they need to correct it so it helps you to eat by sensing how you are tremering the hand.

Introduction to healthy living with technologies

Baby boomers are the demographic group born during the post–World War II baby boom, approximately between the years 1946 and 1964. This includes people who are between 52 and 70 years old in 2016.

These might be the wealthiest, most active, and most physically fit generation up to the era in which they arrived, and might be amongst the first to grow up genuinely expecting the world to improve with time.

Thus, healthy aging becomes one of the most important issues physically, socially, and politically.

In this section, Dr. Luis Fernadez Luque will introduce technologies using in promoting healthy living.
