This planet is so creative. OK. Let's see if there's any love between the IoT and your body. Yes there is. There are now so many IoT products out there which allow you to measure your pulse, sweat, movements, steps, blood pressure, brain activity, all in real time and stored safely in the cloud. You would collect the data, and the applications would typically tell you to change your lifestyle. I used these products recently and the verdict was clear. I sleep too little, I have too much stress, and I should do more exercise.

Let's zoom out a little and scout for home IoT products, and there's some stuff out there which gives real utility. I have a smart thermostat at home here in London from British Gas called Hive. It uses sensors around my house to measure temperature, which connect to my heating system and also to my smartphone so I can put heating schedules and control my system at any time, at any point on this planet. Isn't that fantastic? Another product I love is Philips Hue, which allows you to control the colour of your lamps at home. You want a more romantic setting? No problem.

Yet another smart home product is Smart Lock, which allows you to lock and unlock your home from your smartphone, no matter where you are. More and more products are emerging on a weekly basis, and if the trend persists, we will have homes so smart by 2020, that they will start to interact with each other. Let's see. At city level, the IoT is currently powering the entire movement of smart cities. Here, real time data from sensors in streets, buildings, parks, and citizens allows improving efficiencies of all aspects of urban living.

To start with, we pioneered the notion of smart parking where sensors are installed at each on-street parking bay, allowing us to measure parking occupancy in real time and instruct drivers about the best parking areas in the city. We could prove that congestion and the pollution diminishes by up to 30%. Now, that makes a difference to any city. We also have a joint venture on high precision car counting, and recently we acquired a company with a journey time sensing solution. Put all three products together, and you get a complete picture of the traffic in the city in real time.

Welcome to the city of the future. I could go on for another hour explaining exciting and viable IoT products. However, what do these products have in common? They give a real utility. That is, they solve a real problem by leveraging on real-time data. They happen to use sensors, wireless connectivity, some data analytics, and a beautiful user interface, but in the very essence of it all, they solve a problem. Bear this in mind when building your IoT product.
