Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) seems to be increasingly common in both children and adults. Like all neurodevelopmental disorders it can be difficult to manage, for the person with ADHD and whoever is interacting with them.
Understanding the disorder is crucial to dealing with and treating it. With this four-week course from the University of Palermo, that’s just what you’ll be able to do. By the end, you’ll gain valuable insights into ADHD symptoms, treatment, and impact on daily life.
Learn the neurodevelopmental basis of ADHD
The course begins with a clear definition of ADHD, and how the disordered brain development leads to specific ADHD behaviours of both adults and children.
Typical signs and symptoms of ADHD are explained, and the differences and similarities between ADHD and other neurodevelopmental disorders are discussed.
Learn the treatment and impact of ADHD
Once you have a better understanding of ADHD symptoms and development, the course explores the effects that the disorder can have on an individual’s life.
Finally, ADHD treatment and intervention options are explained. You’ll see how many people are able to successfully live with and manage their ADHD, as part of their everyday life.

Syllabus
Week 1
Attention problems and ADHD. Core symptoms. Differences between adults and children with ADHD
What is ADHD?
In this section, we present the topics and itinerary of the week. We also explore students' previous knowledge on the subject and the myths or prejudices they may have about the disorder.
Understanding attention problems in people with and without ADHD
We will discuss what kind of behaviors and symptoms a person with ADHD have, what behaviors may be due to attention problems, and differences and similarities between common attentional problems in people with and without ADHD.
ADHD in children and adults. Diagnostic and treatment difficulties
In this section, we will see attention problems of adults and children with ADHD more specifically. We will address the diagnostic challenges of ADHD and why this disorder sometimes seems to be "overdiagnosed" or "underdiagnosed".
Week 2
Types of attention and ADHD. Attention models and different ways of classifying attention. Different attention deficits in ADHD
Knowing the types of attention
In this section, we will address different attention types and theoretical models.
The types of attention in ADHD
In this section, we will adress how different types of attention are affected in children and adults with ADHD, and how to assess them.
Impact of the different types of attention deficits on daily life
In this section, we are going to review and show examples and ways in which the different types of attention affect the functionality and daily life activities in ADHD.
Week 3
Relationship of ADHD with other disorders. Differences and similarities. Disorders that can co-occur with ADHD
Comorbidities of ADHD
We will discuss some mental disorders that people with ADHD commonly have, as well as genetic syndromes that can show ADHD and other symptoms.
Disorders that impair attention
We will discuss some disorders that can affect attention, but are not ADHD. We will also discuss which of these disorders occur in children and adults.
Differences between ADHD and other disorders
We will address the similarities and differences between ADHD and other disorders (addressed in Activity 1). This will serve to further understand ADHD treatment (which will be addressed in Week 4).
Week 4
Treatment of ADHD and other neurodevelopmental disorders
Cognitive stimulation
We will address some basic concepts about cognitive stimulation, and settings where it is applied, in different neurodevelopmental disorders.
Children with ADHD treatment
We will address different intervention strategies in children with ADHD, settings where they should be applied and disciplines involved.
ADHD treatment in adults
We will discuss different intervention strategies for children with ADHD, the areas where they should be applied and the disciplines involved.
Closing
Integration of the topics covered throughout the week, and articulation with all the topics of the course.
