Skip to 0 minutes and 6 secondsWelcome to week 1. In this first week of the course, you will learn about what makes a bacterial pathogen and about the breadth of pathogen research at the Wellcome Sanger Institute. You will go on to explore how and why bacteria change over time and why this is important for disease. Next, we will learn about the developments in sequencing technology which have allowed us to sequence the genomes of tens of thousands of bacteria at only a fraction of a cost than it would have done a decade ago. Finally, we will learn what this genomic data looks like and how we analyse it using computers.

Skip to 0 minutes and 35 secondsWe hope you enjoy the first week and we are interested to know your thoughts about the material. We are also happy to answer your questions through the comments section.

Welcome to Week 1

Adam Reid and Josie Bryant introduce you to the bacteria, disease, sequencing and genome browsing topics we will cover in this first week.
