This course offers a thorough introduction to content design and is open to both absolute beginners and professionals.

Content design is a new discipline that focuses on creating and delivering content in a clear and easy-accessible way.

The course is an invaluable tool to learn the main concepts of effective user-centred content design. It explains how to design content that is accessible, backed by user research and written in plain English. In addition, it shows how to create roadmaps and use data to improve and iterate your content.

The material presented in this course builds on and blends the workshops delivered by the GDS Academy and the experiences of many senior content designers who have worked on the digitalisation of the UK Government.

This course gives you the unique opportunity to see how content designers work across the UK Government and exchange tips with other learners.

What topics will you cover?

This course covers important content design principles. It is based on the Digital Data and Technology (DDaT) framework, and includes:

  • content design as a profession, including what content design is, what a content designer does and the skills they need
  • a focus on users, including accessibility, user needs, user research, journey mapping and prototyping
  • producing good digital content, including using plain English and structuring content to make it easy to understand and navigate
  • improving your content, including managing the content lifecycle, and how to use data to improve and iterate content and influence stakeholders
  • improving your career, including understanding the different roles within product teams and joining a content community

Who is the course for?

This course is designed primarily for new content designers and for those who want to work in roles which involve content design. However, seasoned professionals working in other sectors and countries may use this course to explore content design standards and practices in the UK Government.

What software or tools do you need?

The course works on both computers and mobiles.

Video and audio content has been placed in clearly marked sections and is facultative.

If you access the course from an area with patchy internet connection, you can skip the video and audio resources and get the same information from the other sections of the course.

Tommaso is a Senior Learning Designer at the Cabinet Office, an Honorary Research Fellow at the University of Manchester and an adjunct Lecturer at the IE Institute of the University of St Andrews.
