The importance of effective groups and teams

Why are effective groups and teams so important to organisational success, motivation and engagement?

A high degree of trust, open communication, participation and constructive feedback is needed to transform a group into an effective, high-performing team. Effective groups and teams not only help organisations to improve productivity but also to develop and deliver products and services fast and in a cost-efficient way, and to learn more effectively (Chmiel, Fraccaroli, and Sverke 2017). In fact, the majority of organisational goals are achieved by people working in project groups or autonomous production teams.

In today’s organisations, increased national and international competition means that high levels of expertise, skill diversity and adaptability are needed within the workforce. This has made the effectiveness of groups and teams more important than ever (Von Treuer 2013).
