My name is Ms Laura Reaney and I am a Teaching Associate in the Centre for Forensic Science at the University of Strathclyde.

I have over 10 years’ experience working as a Forensic Scientist both in the UK and abroad. During this time I have worked on a wide range of casework from burglary, fraud and sexual assault, to murder, disaster victim identification and terrorism offences.

In addition I have worked as a course developer and guest lecturer in Forensic Science part time for several years throughout the UK before taking up my current position at the University of Strathclyde in 2019.

I am now involved in postgraduate teaching on the MSc Forensic Science programme at the University, which is the longest established forensic degree programme in the UK. My principal areas of teaching are forensic biology and forensic practice which include sexual offence examination, quality assurance, UK Legislation and the role of the expert witness.

As casework manager for the Scottish Independent Forensics Review Services, where we provide second opinion casework and consultancy services, I am also fully competent in all body fluid examinations, Blood Pattern Analysis, DNA analysis and interpretation, recovery and identification of trace evidence (including hairs/fibres and glass) and the analysis of gunshot residue by Scanning Electron Microscopy. I act as an expert witness, producing written statements and giving oral evidence in court for live casework.

My research background and interests are in policy, compliance and stability in the forensic market.
