Important aspects of CSI – introduction

We begin the introduction by giving a brief glimpse of the wide variety of investigations that could reasonably be included under the umbrella title of “forensic science” but are not concerned with crimes in the conventional sense.

All of the examples share a common element – at some point some event is identified as requiring specialist investigation to resolve. In our approach, this event is commonly referred to as the crime scene, and that is where our introduction to forensic science begins.

The significance of the actions taken by those first on the scene cannot be over-stated, they know nothing about what happened, but if they get it wrong a crime may go undetected or the scene become irreversibly compromised. The discussion therefore closes by introducing you to a tool – the 6Ws – that enables the first responders and those who follow to make consistent, objective, and sustainable decisions.
