Skip to 0 minutes and 10 secondsSo is a story easy or difficult to write? Well, it depends, you know. Some people-- there's different kinds of journalists-- there are some people who are amazing writers and maybe struggle a little bit more with getting the story, getting out there and finding all the facts and rummaging around. And there's different stories that are easier to write and there's tough investigative work that might be a challenge to write. What I would say is that you've got to start somewhere. I mean, I remember some of the first pieces I wrote. I think that the word count was supposed to be 600 and I might have filed like 6,000. Completely oblivious to what I was supposed to be doing.

Skip to 0 minutes and 49 secondsI find that writing does come naturally if you have all the good detail. Then it makes it easier. When you're stretching a story, and really, it's not that great, I think just really, that story then doesn't deserve the word count that you're giving it and it's time to move on to something else. Give it that 200 words and it's time to go find a better story. If you're really struggling to write, I think it means that maybe you don't have enough opinion in there, you don't have enough facts, and you've got to work harder at it to make it interesting.

Skip to 1 minute and 19 secondsAnd one of the key things I remind people is if you're bored writing it, then people will be bored reading it.

Skip to 1 minute and 40 secondsSo is a news story easy or hard to write? Well, I mean, you guys teach the medium. You can tell, I would imagine, who's going to make the grade. I feel, as a dinosaur of the industry, that you still have to have the instinct. I felt I had an instinct to write. I had to be taught the finer points of investigating journalism. And in my day, it was day release. And the great thing about that was you worked at a paper four days a week and one day, in my case, you went to the Glasgow College of Commerce and you learned your journalistic trade.

Skip to 2 minutes and 23 secondsBut if you're on a course I think you will know after the first year whether you have the instinct to be that journalist.

Selecting the strongest quote - example

In light of what we’ve considered regarding selection of quotes, now listen to this recording of two interviews.
