How it works
Introduction to Using Total Intravenous Anaesthesia (TIVA)
Grow your understanding of TIVA techniques and how to use them
Total intravenous anaesthesia (TIVA) has several increasingly obvious advantages over inhalation techniques. Traditional anaesthesia teaching, however, is skewed towards inhalation.
This medical course from Hong Kong University will dispel myths and misunderstandings about TIVA and will help you translate theoretical knowledge of using TIVA into your everyday practice.
Explore the pharmacokinetics of common drugs used for TIVA
There are many advantages of TIVA. From ease of use and safety to affordability and availability of both the drugs and equipment, recent developments in TIVA have made it more of a suitable option for administering anaesthetic.
On this course, you’ll look at the psychological and social factors that have created a behavioural barrier for the TIVA technique. You’ll then delve into the proprietary pharmacokinetic models, as well as the pharmacokinetics of the different drugs used for TIVA.
Discover analgesia for TIVA and how to ensure a smooth recovery
Ensuring a smooth recovery from TIVA is vital for many reasons. This course will guide you through intra-operative and postoperative analgesia for TIVA to help you improve the recovery process following anaesthesia.
Then, to broaden your understanding of this practice and better inform your decisions, you’ll dive into the environmental impact of anaesthesia.
Learn from the experts at LKS Faculty of Medicine
HKUMed is the longest established institution of higher education in Hong Kong and consistently ranks as one of the top three universities in Asia for clinical, pre-clinical, and health subjects.
As a well-known pioneer in medical education, training, and research, the LKS Faculty of Medicine at the University of Hong Kong is perfectly placed to guide you through using TIVA.
Syllabus
Week 1
Barriers and Advantages of TIVA
Course Welcome
Thank you for enrolling in our course. We look forward to guiding you on your educational journey as you learn more about TIVA
Resistance to Change and Barriers
Resistance to change is human nature and in order to embrace change, it is necessary to leave our comfort zone. We look at the factors that may influence this and specifically the barriers to the widespread uptake of TIVA.
Advantages of TIVA
TIVA has many advantages from better recovery profiles to potentially improved outcomes in patients undergoing cancer surgery.
Week 2
TIVA, TCI & Models
TIVA, TCI & Models
This week we will look at the differences between manual and target-controlled infusions. In addition to covering some of the most popular models available on the market.
Pharmacokinetics of Intravenous Anaesthetics
Pharmacology plays a central role in anaesthesia. Despite our vast clinical experience, pharmacokinetics can be intimidating. This week we will cover the basic components that will enhance your ability to deliver TIVA safely.
TCI Infusions
TCI incorporates complex pharmacokinetic models with multiple covariates, to represent diverse patient populations, along with features such as effect site and plasma site to allow the safe delivery of TIVA.
TCI Models
Which TCI model should I use? This week we will discuss the benefits and limitations of the commercially available models.
Week 3
TIVA Dosing and Depth of Anaesthesia
TIVA dosing and depth of Anaesthesia
This week will look at the effective concentration of propofol required in the general population and basics of using depth of anaesthesia monitors.
Introduction to TIVA Dosing
Join us to learn how to use propofol TCI pumps for induction, maintenance and recovery of anaesthesia.
Depth of Anaesthesia Monitoring
Depth of anaesthesia monitoring is a useful too that can aid us in titrating anaesthesia and potentially reduce the risk of underdosing and overdosing of anaesthesia.

Week 4
Adjuncts and Analgesia
Adjuncts and Analgesia
This week we will outline some typical analgesic adjuncts used in propofol-based anaesthesia as well as options for perioperative analgesia.
TIVA and the role of supplementary drugs
Using TIVA with adjuncts
Preventive Analgesia Strategies
Preventive or pre-emptive multimodal analgesia can help maximise the benefit of TIVA.
Quiz
Let us end this module with a quiz. The following questions will be based on the material covered earlier this week.
Week 5
Smooth Recovery and Sedation
Smooth Recovery and Sedation
This week we describe how to improve the quality of your patient's recovery profile as well as the role of TIVA in sedation or monitored anaesthesia care
Smooth Recovery
TIVA is associated with a smoother recovery profile. High-quality emergence relies on the understanding and interplay of multiple factors. Join us this week to learn more.
Procedural Sedation
TIVA for procedural sedation
Week 6
Special Patient Cohorts
The Obstetric Patient and TIVA
Dr Rosemarie Kearsley, Consultant Anaesthesiologist at the Rotunda Hospital, Ireland explains all you need to know to get started to deliver TIVA for obstetric general anaesthesia.
The Elderly Patient and TIVA
Dr Claire Frith-Keyes, Consultant Anaesthesiologist Tallaght University Hospital (previously UCL), explains how to deliver TIVA to our ageing population. Her special interests include perioperative medicine and clinical education
The Obese Patient and TIVA
Obesity is a global epidemic and the problem is increasing despite various actions and campaigns to address this issue. TIVA offers a number of potential advantages for patients living with obesity.
Emergency Surgery and TIVA
Dr Tom Emms joins our team of educators as we walk through the use of TIVA in the emergency setting. After completion, we hope you will be more confident in delivering the benefits of TIVA for emergency surgery.
Special Patient Cohorts
This week we take a look at the different patient cohorts we may encounter in theatre.
Week 7
Green Anaesthesia
Green Anaesthesia
This week we outline the problem of global warming and how our choices as anaesthetist can impact the carbon footprint we leave
Global Warming
Healthcare systems across the world contribute to large amounts of their countries greenhouse gases. A conscientious effort should be made by healthcare providers to reduce energy consumption and lower greenhouse gas emissions.
