Introducing wellbeing at work

As you saw in the introductory video, teacher recruitment and retention are becoming a serious issue in the UK.

The Department for Education released a report showing teachers’ reasons for leaving the profession. The teachers tend to experience ‘excessive workload’ such as marking, planning, duties beyond their teaching role, and ‘stress and ill health’ such as sleeping problems, panic attacks and anxiety issues. They also mentioned a ‘lack of support from senior members’ (DFE 2018).

What does the Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development (CIPD) have to say about employee wellbeing?

According to the CIPD:

‘Fostering employee wellbeing is good for people and the organisation. Promoting wellbeing can help prevent stress and create positive working environments where individuals and organisations can thrive. Good health and wellbeing can be a core enabler of employee engagement and organisational performance.’

Conversely, poor employee wellbeing not only costs the individual but increasingly costs organisations.

The findings of the CIPD annual survey (CIPD 2018) exploring issues of health, wellbeing and absence in UK workplaces report the following:

Working when unwell

  • 86% of respondents report observing ‘presenteeism’ (being at work when unwell) in their organisation over the last 12 months

Long-term absence

  • The most common cause, 56%, of long-term absence is mental ill health. 31% of organisations have seen an increase in stress-related absence over the last 12 months
  • Workloads and volume of work (60%)
  • Management style (32%)
  • Non-work factors, for example, family or relationships (27%)

Benefits of investing in health and wellbeing

  • The main benefits to the organisation of investing in wellbeing are:
    • Better employee morale and engagement
    • A healthier more inclusive culture
    • Lower sickness absence
