Learn Irish and be inspired by the rich culture of Ireland

On this course, you’ll develop your knowledge of the Irish language and explore the many facets of Ireland’s culture.

The course is set at an elementary level and, by the end of the course, you should feel more confident speaking and understanding Irish grammar at a more intermediate level.

The course covers subjects such as health and feelings, food and drink, sport, and music.

You’ll also explore relevant aspects of Irish culture that are woven into the language in order to understand the language and country at a deeper level.

  • Week 1

    Week 1 - The Body and Health

      Welcome to the course!

    • An Duine/The Person

      This is the primary topic that learners will cover in the course this week.

    • Sláinte/Health

      We will learn to talk about our health here and to express how we are feeling and to discuss different illnesses and ailments.

    • Pearsantacht/Personality

      In this activity learners will learn how to discuss their personality traits.

    • Athbhreithniú/Review

      In this activity section we will look back at what we have learned on the course so far this week.

    • Gaelphobal Mhuineacháin/Monaghan Irish-language community

      In this activity we will learn about the Monaghan Irish-language community.

    • Céard atá foghlamtha agat?/What have you learned?

      An activity that recaps on everything that has been learned in Week 1 of Irish 203.

  • Week 2

    Week 2 - Food and Drink

    • Fáilte go Seachtain 2/Welcome to Week 2

      Introduction to the second week of Irish 203.

    • Bia agus Deoch/Food and Drink

      In this activity, we will learn how to discuss different foods and drinks and to describe the foods we like and dislike.

    • Cuireadh chun Béile/An Invitation to Dine

      In this activity, we will look at how to extend and accept/decline invitations as well as learning how to order food in a restaurant.

    • Cleachtaimis/Let's practise

      In this activity, learners will get the chance to put into practice what they have learned so far this week on Irish 203.

    • Gaelphobal Mhuineacháin/Monaghan Irish-language community

      In this activity, we will build on what we learned about Gaelphobal Mhuineacháin in Week 1.

    • Cultúr na hÉireann/Irish Culture

      In this activity learners will learn more about the traditional culture of Ireland.

    • Céard atá foghlamtha agat?/What have you learned?

      In this activity, learners will get the chance to recap on what they have learned this week in Irish 203.

  • Week 3

    Week 3 - Sport

    • Fáilte go Seachtain 3/Welcome to Week 3

      A video which welcomes learners to Week 3 of Irish 203 and outlines the topics that will be covered throughout the week.

      In this activity, learners will learn how to discuss their favourite pastimes.

    • Spórt/Sport

      In this activity, learners will learn how to discuss sport.

    • Ballraíocht/Membership

      In this activity, learners will learn how to discuss the clubs of which they are members.

      In this activity, learners will get to put into practice what they have learned so far this week.

    • Gaelphobal Mhuineacháin/Monaghan Irish-language community

      In this activity, we will delve deeper into Gaelphobal Mhuineacháin, the Monaghan Irish-language community.

    • Cultúr na hÉireann/Irish Culture

      In this activity, learners will learn some more about Irish culture and traditions.

      In this activity, learners will get to discuss and review what they have learned throughout Week 3 of Irish 203.

    Week 4 - Music

      Introduction to week 4 and what will be covered.

      Learners will review the phrases used to describe their hobbies discussed in Week 3.

    • Cleachtaimis!/Let's Practise!

      Learners will be presented with the opportunity to put into practice what they have learned throughout Irish 203.

    • Athbhreithniú/Revision

      Learners will briefly review the topics covered in Weeks 1-3 of the course and will be prompted to reflect on what they have found difficult and/or enjoyable so far.

    • Cultúr na hÉireann/Irish Culture

      Learners will learn about the importance of music in Irish culture, in the past and in contermporary times.

    • Céard atá foghlamtha agat?/What have you learned?

      Opportunity for learners to pause and reflect on their learning.

By the end of the course, you‘ll be able to...

  • Discuss languages and language-learning in Irish.
  • Compare and discuss different television and radio shows and describe one’s opinions regarding this.
  • Describe different books and share opinions regarding literature in Irish.
  • Describe and talk about the future and plan for upcoming events in Irish.
  • Engage with pieces of spoken and written Irish based on the themes of the course.
  • Compose short written tasks using set phrases relating to specific topics covered in the course.
  • Explain and express orally information and opinions in Irish relating to the themes of the course.
  • Demonstrate and learn different aspects of Irish grammar in context.
  • Engage with elements of Irish culture and mythology through storytelling, music, literature and song.

Who is the course for?

The course is designed for adult elementary Irish language learners looking to work towards intermediate level.

This may include the Irish diaspora, international Irish language and cultural enthusiasts, indigenous learners of the language who wish to learn the language from scratch again and anyone who wants to learn the basics of Irish and the culture associated with it.
