• Tatchu : 塔頭 the term is an idiom consisted of the Chinese character ‘塔’ and a suffix ‘頭,’ yet the (original) meaning is same as ‘塔.’ ‘塔’ is an abbreviation of ‘Sotoba [卒塔婆]’—the Chinese transliteration of the Sanskrit word “Stupa”—which originally meant about Buddhist monument in which Buddha’s sarira (Busshari [仏舎利]) were laid. The triple tower and the five-storied pagoda (in the large temples of Nara and Kyoto) were built in this purpose, yet gradually, it also started covering the graves of Buddhist priests. [3.1]
