Introduction to Week 3

In Week 3 we present an introduction to Jazz Funk and other jazz styles. After looking at something of the history of jazz funk we discuss and play a funk version of “So What”. This is followed by two other standards “Little Sunflower” and “Cantaloupe Island” which are frequently given funk versions. The next influence we consider is classical music and the resulting area is usually called Third Stream and it is illustrated by a section from a suite of mine called “Four By Four”. We then briefly consider Indo-Fusion or Indo Jazz where Indian music is fused with jazz. Finally we briefly look at the two other areas of free jazz and improvised music.
