In Week 4 we start by discussing the status of Special Devices – my fourth route to improvising – pointing out the dangers of overuse. We look at six different devices and apply the final device of “bluesification” to the standard “Take The A Train”. We briefly discuss the role of pedalling in jazz piano and then introduce the jazz standard “Bye Bye Blackbird” and use this tune to illustrate special devices. This is followed by and introduction to comping – playing supporting chords under a soloist. We then have a section of hot licks lasting for 2 bars on the chords F major7, F minor7 and F7. The week concludes with the analysis and playing of two important jazz standards “Beautiful Love” and “My Romance”.
