I’m gonna use an iRealB playalong playing the pulse pretty slowly. I’ll play a chord of C7 in the left hand but I don’t have to because what’s important is the right hand. Everything I play twice, so you can either play with me or repeat after I’ve played it. The very first bar is pretty straightforward, but hold the note down until you get to the next bar. So it’s 1,2,3,4, off,2,3,4.
Skip to 0 minutes and 54 seconds Similarly two: 1,2,3,4, off,2,3,4. Then we’ve got crotchets. Then we’ve got quavers. Then we’ve got semi-quavers and the way I like to think of these is to use the expression “dugga dugga”.
Skip to 1 minute and 12 seconds So 1,2,3,4, dugga dugga, dugga dugga, dugga dugga, dugga dugga. And then six is triplets and I like to think of it as 1&a, 2&a, 3&a, 4&a, 1&a, 2&a, 3&a, 4&a. Seven is our old friend jazz-inflected quavers durda, durda, durda, durda, which you can get from six, obviously. Eight’s a little bit harder, because it’s 3s against 2s, so it’s 1,2,3,4, durdurda, durdurda. You’ve got 3s against 2 beats underneath it. Nine is just the same thing where you miss out the second note in each triplet. Ten is hard. Ten - one way to think of it is to think of it as being eight
Skip to 2 minutes and 1 second where you you play the first, the third and the fifth: dah, dah, dah, dah, dah, dah; dah, dah, dah - bit difficult to do out of context. Let’s have a go.
